When Metroid released in 1986, it didn’t just introduce a new Nintendo franchise — it quietly helped change the way games were designed. Instead of pushing players from level to level, Metroid asked them to explore, get lost, and slowly understand its world on their own.
Despite growing up in the NES era, this was one game I somehow missed. Now, decades later, I finally sat down and played Metroid from beginning to end — and it completely changed how I see not only the series, but modern game design as a whole.
In this review, I talk about:
Why Metroid was so ahead of its time
How exploration and progression define the experience
Why the game clicked for me now, but didn’t as a kid
How its ideas carried forward into games like Metroid Prime
And how Metroid helped lay the groundwork for what we now call the Metroidvania genre
This isn’t just a retro review — it’s a look at why Metroid still matters today, and why it’s absolutely worth playing even now.
